Keep it Simple (Stupid)
I won’t go over the concept of simplifying because it is covered pretty adequately here.
What I will say is that HR people often ignore this principle because they are exempt! I mean, come on! They have so many rules to follow and theories to keep track of, how could they simplify things any further?
We all tend to make things more complicated than necessary. Especically in the HR world. In almost every interview guide, it gives you a whole list of questions not to ask candidates. The most simple approach I give hiring managers is to ask only questions that are applicable to the job at hand. And guess what: 99% of them do well at this! They don’t ask inappropriate questions.
We can make fun of hiring managers all we like (I do sometimes). But most, if given assured advice that is simple and easy to follow, will do better than giving them complicated directions on what to say and not to say.
The same goes for policies. Make your policies easy to understand and follow and more people will understand and follow them.
It is good business advice too but I’ll leave that for the business gurus.
